Training on Nutrient Recovery and Re-use of Human Waste for Food Production - Closing Sanitation, Agriculture and Nutrient Loops (15-18 Nov 2016 at CDD/CASS)

From 15th to 18th November, 18 international participants from various professional backgrounds gathered at the CASS training centre to learn about conceptual and practical implications of human waste reuse in agriculture.

Three of the four days were dedicated to lectures given by both in-house and external experts on the topics of wastewater treatment, reuse of human waste, agriculture, policy, and risk assessment. Apart from the content conveyed by the lecturers, group tasks and discussions also furthered the participants’ understanding of the topic, and helped form inter-disciplinary and international ties.

On the third day, the group visited the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) in Devanahalli, which also comprised a co-composting unit. A tour of the actual FSTP was followed by a demonstration of the correct construction of a windrow composting pile.
