From BORDA Partner FEDINA Written by Ms. Catherine Unemployment, underemployment, contract and migrant labour, earning low wages, - subject to bad working conditions, and prone to total absence of security are some of the problems that plague our society. Empowerment, we figured, would decrease the density of these impeding societal problems. People need to be equipped with appropriate tools. They need to gain the right to form unions, to participate in collective bargaining and to work in a secure environment. We are talking of three complementary elements that work towards strengthening the desire to break free from the shackles of below subsistence living.

From BORDA Partner Exnora Written by V. Ganapathy, Advisor, Trichy District
In their own humble but unique way, a dozen women of East Devadhanam, Tiruchirapalli town, in Tamil Nadu, celebrated Renewable Energy day, the birthday of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. They used the copious supply of biogas generated from the DEWATS unit, as fuel to prepare delicious sweets like Kesari and Sundal. These were distributed to about 200 residents of the area and 50 children who are users of the Child Friendly toilet in East Devadhanam.

From BORDA Partner RLHP Written by Dr. G. William A critical component of a DEWATS, in sharp contrast to a septic tank system, is the safe discharge of treated wastewater. In fact, ensuring safe discharge is an integral part of the technical feasibility conditions. If this is not ensured beyond all doubt at the planning stage, then a host of problems can crop up after completion of the structure of the treatment plant. A case in point is the DEWATS in Roopanagar slum, Mysore.
