In this issue, we present information on the post-implementation activities of DEWATS projects and various ongoing CDD training programmes on decentralised basic needs services. CDD Society sponsored Charkha Awards for Excellence in Development Journalism

 In order to appreciate, encourage and strengthen development journalism in the regional language newspapers, Communication for Development Learning (CDL), an NGO based in Bangalore, instituted the Charkha Awards for Excellence in Development Journalism (Kannada) in 2003. In 2010, Charkha Awards were expanded to offer theme-based awards on specific development areas. As a result, a bouquet of Awards for Development Journalism were introduced which recognises the quality and extent of the coverage to a particular issue. CDL seeks the support of NGO for each award theme. This year the themes selected for Charkha Awards were Women’s Rights, Child Rights, Disability, Sanitation and Water.

 CDD Society is pleased to announce a three day training of Health and Hygiene Experts from 26th- 28th July at Centre for Advanced Sanitation Solutions (CASS), Bengaluru. The Training programme aims to upgrade the knowledge and skills of health workers working with communities to increase awareness levels on public health and sanitation and to inform, mobilise and enable communities to sustainably integrate health and sanitation concerns.

 The Consortium for DEWATS Dissemination (CDD) Society aims to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental conditions of the disadvantaged and marginalised people in South Asia through the provision of Decentralised Basic Needs Services (DBNS). CDD Society's programmes are supported by Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA), Germany.

CDD Society believes in building capacities to provide decentralised basic needs services. Under its DBNS programme, CDD Society offers various specialised trainings. These trainings provide participants with practical skills and knowledge to conceptualise, plan, implement, maintain and monitor decentralised systems like DEWATS, Community Based Sanitation systems, water and energy supply in mountainous areas, solid waste management and other sanitation related services.

The Training Calendar gives you the opportunity to plan your schedule in time and participate in the training of your choice.

DWETC organises Community Awareness Training on Water and Sanitation

About DHAN Water Expertise Training Centre (DWETC)

 The purpose of the Centre is to promote and sustain the behavioral change practices on health, especially in drinking water and sanitation among poor communities. DHAN Water Expertise Training Centre is the result of the collaboration between DHAN Foundation and the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST, Canada). CAWST has promoted several water expertise Centres in India to address issues of safe drinking water and sanitation. Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provides funding support. DHAN Foundation is responsible for human resource support and offering an enabling environment. Tata-Dhan Academy, an educational initiative of DHAN Foundation would nurture the Centre as a Resource Centre and provide national level training programmes along with CAWST. The Centre is governed by a Consultative Group, Steering Committee and Implementation Team.

LEDeG announces 7-days National Training Programme on Community Based Micro Hydro Power Units (MHPU) from 30th August to 5th September 2010 at Leh, Ladakh. The training aims at systematic transfer of knowledge and skills required for planning, implementation and management of successful community based micro hydro power units. The training is meant for project managers, project coordinators, MHPU supervisors, technicians and promoters of MHPU. Certificates of participation will be awarded to the participants on successful completion of the training course. The training brochure and application form are attached. The training is being organised in collaboration with CDD Society, Bangalore and BORDA, Germany.

IIYW organizes awareness programme on “Climate Change”

 Under the National Environment Awareness Campaign of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, a Programme on “Maintenance of Water Bodies and Reducing Foot Prints of CO2” was organized by Indian Institute of Youth Welfare, Nagpur, in its premises at Shivaji Nagar on 11th Feb 2010. 41 students including boys and girls from Swami Vivekananda College of Social work, Tirpude College of Social work and MSS Institute of Social work, Nagpur, actively participated. The programme was funded through BAIF Development Research Foundation, Pune.
