Following the tsunami of 26^th December 2004, NGOs and the Government of Tamil Nadu (GOTN) were involved in relief and rehabilitation operations for affected communities in coastal Tamil Nadu. The initial thrust was towards provision of temporary shelters which paved the way for the establishment of permanent shelters under various rehabilitation packages of NGOs and the GoTN.

Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW)

International Collaboration in promoting Micro Hydro Power Units in Ladakh Region, Jammu and Kashmir, India

In 2007, two engineering students of the Institute of Civil Engineers in Muttenz, under the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), were provided the opportunity to do their diploma thesis on MHPU (Micro Hydro Power Unit) for remote villages in Ladakh. The Study was supported by LEDeG (Ladakh Ecological Development Group), a local NGO, which promotes “Decentralization of Renewable Energies (DeRES)” for over 20 years in remote areas of Ladakh.

A German team comprising of an environmental expert, a journalist, a sanitation expert and a finance expert were all in Musiri in Trichy District of Tamilnadu, India, last week. They spent three nights and four days in the houses of two families, who were selected as they were successfully using Ecosan toilets for the past two years. Ecosan technology aims at reducing water for toilet purposes, treating and reusing black water by scientific management and recovering the nutrients in human waste as organic manure for farming and ensuring food security.

DEWATS-CBS Program at Kolhapur – Feed back by the members of the Community Sanitation Committees at Rajendranagar and Salokhepark

1. Prior to the DEWATS-CBS Project intervention in Rajendranagar/Salokhe Park, Kolhapur (2006), the sanitary conditions there were rather pathetic. People threw waste on the roads and public toilets were in a dilapidated condition and not cleaned regularly; the result was people defecating in the open and stinking unhygienic conditions. This became hazardous to the health of people.

Nearly 1.2 billion practice open defecation worldwide of which about 665 million are Indians. Thus one of every two persons compelled to defecate in the open is an Indian. In India, 665 million people defecate in the open – along roadsides, on farmland, in municipal parks, in open drains, on river banks and seashores.

Frequent dialogues with the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) and the need for solid waste management in Mysore City have led the MCC Commissioner to launch solid waste management in the City. Several waste collectors (Street Beautifiers) from slums are employed on contract. Almost all of them are illiterate and did not have any prior training on the subject. Though exploited by contractors yet they work, as it is their only means of livelihood. Their monthly income is Rs. 2500/-. As Street Beautifiers, they collect waste at the doorstep on a tri-wheeler, with three dust bins and dispose of these at designated places.

We present the November 2008 issue of e-Disha. Services providing for basic needs are a must. Efforts are ongoing at macro and micro levels to reach as many people as possible. Let us try and do our bit to achieve the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals).

Fanjilla is a village nestling deep in the Sham region, Wanla Block, Leh District, at an altitude of 3300m. It is a small village consisting of about 120 people comprising of 14 house-holds. The main occupation of the villagers is subsistence farming and daily wage labor. During the summer months the village acts as a base for trekkers who pass through it on their way to the Kunchkilah Pass and Chilin Sumdah Village. The Village is a meeting point of two streams and offers a great camping spot. The farms in the village are irrigated by glacial melt waters from the Hinju Glacier. The main religion of the village is Buddhism. It is surrounded by small hamlets comprising of 10-15 House-holds.

It was the holy month of Ramazan, a few days before Ramazan would be celebrated by the Muslim brethren in Bijapur. 27^th September 2008 had been scheduled for the workshop on dissemination of DEWATS, for elected representatives from the districts of Bagalkot, Bijapur and Gulbarga.  The workshop was scheduled to begin at 10.30 am at the Hotel Heritage in the city of Bijapur. The FEDINA team had worked hard preparing for the workshop for over a month and half in advance. Nearly 75 elected representatives were personally contacted and their participation solicited. At least 30 of them were expected to participate judging from the response and interest shown. Every thing was ready: the folders, files and workshop material. The registration was to begin from 9.30 am …..

The periodical desludging of the first CBS-DEWATS in Tamil Nadu in East Devadhanam, Trichy, was successfully completed during a 5-day operation from Sept 9^th to 13^th 2008, with the very active support of all main stakeholders namely the community, Trichy City Corporation, ExNoRa International and CDD Society, Bangalore. The DEWATS in Trichy East Devadhanam Community toilet was commissioned in June 2005. The desludging of the biogas settler (BGS) was completed earlier in February 2008, when it was found that the inspection chamber and the inlet from the toilets were choking the BGS. The 5-day operation was a well-planned and well-coordinated operation in which all the stakeholders participated with a very high sense of commitment and sincerity.
