Indian Institute of Youth Welfare (IIYW), Nagpur The Indian Institute of Youth Welfare was founded in 1973 as a society dedicated to the development of youth. The Institute organizes training courses, seminars and workshops for youth and undertakes developmental activities involving them, the idea being to prepare an informed cadre of functionaries from both Government and non-government agencies, which is responsible for bringing about the changes desired by the targeted communities. IIYW's activities involve amongst others: training of anganwadi workers, residential activities such as seminars and workshops at its Nagpur center, community life centers run in selected slums of Nagpur city, vocational training classes for women, Central Government scheme of placing multi purpose workers in villages and the like. IIYW also works in rural areas and is a Resource Agency for women and child development as well as for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. IIYW implements projects dealing with slum improvement, housing and income generation for poorer sections. It also carries out training programs for 'Bhachat groups' 'Panchayati Raj' workers, primary teachers and 'Mukhya Sevikas'; it is also involved in the Prime Ministers's Rojgar Yojna. In its efforts to promote health and sanitation in its areas of work, IIYW initiated the DEWATS program. It has constructed a DEWATS demonstration unit at the Vocational Training Centre, Lonara, which was commissioned recently. The institute also conducts training programs for improved water and sanitation conditions for the youth of the slums around Lonara. Workshops for income generation activities for the young girls of the area are also conducted. A solid waste management program with people living in slums has been initiated. IIYW has also set up a vermiculture unit. IIYW has planned four more DEWATS units in 2005 at Dashrathnagar and Vishwas Nagar.
