BORDA Cooperation Partner LEDeG

The Ladakh Ecological Development Group (LEDeG)

LEDeG was formed in 1981, with the intention to promote a sustainable developmental policy based on ecological principles, with an emphasis on local conditions and resources, especially on local traditions. This was done to strike a balance between human needs and what nature provides. This will help to protect the environment and preserve the foundation of traditional culture, thus ensuring sustainable development.

LEDeG has been working in a close network with many local, national and international organisations on various developmental issues, it has received many honours and has been internationally recognized for its unique approaches and achievements. LEDeG has won the prestigious “Right To Livelihood Award” popularly known as alternative Nobel Prize in the year 1986 and also the award for sustainable and participatory development from a Danish developmental organisation.

LEDeG seeks to educate the people about global developmental issues while emphasizing the needs or the preservation and promotion of traditional culture. They are exploring ways of stabilizing local economy and raising the standard of living that support rather than erode the fragile environment and local tradition.
